Probably the final pair of AML ezP-1A ever to be made have arrived at the studio. An incredibly accurate representation of the legendary Pultec EQP-1A Tube EQ and straight into our mixing setup!

The EQP-1A was famously used by Motown Studio Tamla, Abbey Roads Studio and Electric Lady Studios as well as legendary producers Bruce Swedien and Butch Vig. It’s still used in many modern studios such as Eastcote and MixStar to add analogue glue (particularly useful with multiple synths 😉), shape vocals and add low end.

The Pultec has an iconic low-end trick that takes advantage of its unique design to simultaneously boost and cut the same low-frequency band, creating a distinctive tonal effect. It adds warmth, depth, and punch to the low end while keeping it tight and controlled.

Celebrating @rolandglobal TB303 day with the iconic Bassline! The father of Acid House and the squelchy leads that defined an era!

The TB303 was a failed bass synth from Roland, aimed at replacing bass players from 1984 onwards having already done away with Drummers in the previous years. It found a second life in the mid-late 80s when @djpierrephuture released the track ‘Acid Tracka’ and the rest is history!

The iconic sound is a made from 5 key ingredients:

The low pass filter (24db) to create bite
Resonance and cutoff frequency sweep with high resonance makes the warble and slide
The accent feature bumping up the amplitude and filter openness for punchy notes
Overdriving the oscillator with sawtooth waveform for gritty distortion and squelch
Analog imperfections giving the sound character and unpredictability

The @rolandglobal TR-707 Rhythm Composer from 1985, it was Roland’s first fully digital drum machine. Unlike its analog predecessors like the TR-808, the TR-707 used 8-bit samples (with 6-bit cymbals) of real acoustic drums, offering 15 sounds including kicks, snares, toms, hi-hats, cymbals, cowbell, and handclaps.

The TR-707 became a staple in early Chicago house and acid house, with producers like Marshall Jefferson using it on tracks like “Move Your Body” and Mr. Fingers (Larry Heard) featuring it in “Washing Machine.” Beyond house, Phil Collins tapped its crisp digital tones for pop hits, while Aphex Twin and Squarepusher later embraced its quirky charm for experimental electronic works. INXS’s “Need You Tonight” also showcases its punchy snares and hi-hats, proving its versatility across genres.

The TR-707 is very underrated compared to the TR-808 and TR-909, but it shares some sonic DNA with the 909—its hi-hats, claps, and cymbals are very similar to the 909’s, making it an alternative source for those iconic sounds. Its cowbell also became a signature element in house music, echoing through countless tracks and sample packs.
