We’ve plugged in the @yamahakeyboardsofficial CS50 to have a play with.

One of its interesting and rare features is that as well as gliding, you can set the CS50s portamento so that it acts like a step between notes rather than a glide, giving you an arpeggiator. You can hear this from 52 seconds onwards.

The Dave Smith Instruments Poly Evolver was releas

The Dave Smith Instruments Poly Evolver was released in 2005 as their flagship synthesizer. It features 2 digital oscillators (FM synthesis, Ring Modulation and 96 Prophet VS Wavetables, plus 32 user wavetables) and 2 Analog Oscillators (with pulse width modulation and hard sync) running through both analog (low pass) and digital (high pass) filters and an analog VCA. The onboard effects including delay, distortion and a sequencer that was one of its standout features on launch. It’s fair to say, they went all out with this version.

As part of the Evolver series, DSI also released the Evolver, Poly Evolver, Evolver desktop and the Mono Evolver. The Poly Evolver keyboard was discontinued in 2013 and due to its limited production and excellent sound and features will become a future classic.

The Poly Evolver was released under the Dave Smith Instruments (DSI) name instead of Sequential Circuits after the name was bought by Yamaha in 1987. It wasn’t until 2015 that they returned the rights to Dave Smith and the Prophet 6 was launched.

The Poly Evolver was used by artists such as #trentreznor @thechemicalbrothers @deadmau5 @wolfganggartner

The @oberheim_electronics Two-Voice (TVS-1), produ

The @oberheim_electronics Two-Voice (TVS-1), produced from 1975 to 1979, was one of the earliest polyphonic analog synthesizers, combining two of Oberheim’s SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module) units with a 37-note keyboard and a built-in 16-step sequencer. This design allowed you to play two notes simultaneously, a significant advancement in an era dominated by monophonic synthesizers.

The Two-Voice offered features such as 4 VCOs per 2 voice, 2 x lowpass filter with adjustable cutoff and resonance, and 2 x LFO with a triangle wave, providing a rich palette of sounds. One of the key features is its modularity; the SEMs could be used independently or together, offering flexibility in sound design.

Notable artists who used the Oberheim Two-Voice include @markmothersbaugh in ‘The Life Aquatic’ soundtrack, @alehan @adrian.utley @theprodigyofficial @liamhowlettfanpage @vinceclarkeofficial @jeanmicheljarre and Vangelis

Following on from the reissued SEM modules. In 2016, Tom Oberheim reissued the TVS, renamed the ‘Two-Voice Pro’, enhancing it with modern features like MIDI integration and an improved sequencer, while retaining the analog character that made the original a classic. Unfortunately only 374 were made during this production run. In 2021 an even smaller run of the TVS Pro Special edition were made which sold out in one day.
